Tomiko Asahina (朝比奈 富子 Asahina Tomiko) is Satoru's grandmother and the head of the Ethics Committee.

Appearance

Tomiko has wavy, dark grey hair that reaches to her neck, and deep blue eyes. She appears much younger than her age due to her ability to regenerate her telomeres through use of Cantus. Tomiko is seen to only wear kimonos, a traditional Japanese dress.

About 245 years ago, she had ash brown hair. During her occupation as nurse, she wore an outfit which consisted of a sky blue dress with a white collar and white cuffs, a white apron with a left pocket, and a white bonnet featuring a red symbol. On her left sleeve there appears to be embroidery of the same symbol.

In the manga, this outfit was quite different. She appears to be wearing a solid scrub top with sleeves that end above the elbow and a Peter Pan styled collar. She also wore scrub pants that end above the ankle, a nurse's cap, and nursing shoes. All of these were lighter colors.

Biography

Tomiko intends for Saki to succeed her position as she possesses a strong mental stability as well as qualities of a leader. Because of this, she had asked the Board of Education not to dispose of Saki and her friends despite knowing about the true history. She also revealed that they were responsible for erasing their bad memories of the past to protect the minds of the townsfolk.

Although her cantus usage was always perfectly average during her time in Sage Academy, she possesses one ability that no one else but her has ever known to have; The ability to speed up the generation of her telomeres (Parts at the ends of human chromosomes. Every time a cell divides, its telomeres are shortened a little, which tends to be faster than they regenerate. If the telomeres wear down, the cell stops replicating and eventually dies. Therefore, the length of our telomeres controls the human lifespan) through using cantus. With the ability to regenerate the telomeres in her cells, Tomiko managed to extend her life, having lived for more than 250 years, while being chairman for the Ethics Committee for 170. She also had a close encounter with a fiend in the past, about 245 years ago, when she worked as a nurse.
